Ediciones Universidad Católica de Chile, Ediciones UC, was founded in 1975 to provide editorial services that might support teaching, research and literary efforts undertaken at the university, as well as to publish literary works of a more general nature.
It is our mission to act as a relevant interlocutor in the university’s dialogue with culture and as a window onto society, through the very vital space we have created for the publication of books of the highest caliber, books that disseminate and extend the frontiers of contemporary knowledge and scholarship.
Throughout its renowned editorial trajectory, Ediciones UC has served as an ambassador of sorts for the university in its relationship to the society in which it functions, and has emerged as the predominant university press in the country, with distribution throughout Chile and Latin America and a catalogue that includes over 600 active titles spanning all areas of university endeavors. Our books, the result of innovative, compelling projects of research and scholarship, are written by authors who are, in most cases, either renowned academics from the Universidad Católica de Chile or external writers who believe Ediciones UC to be an attractive, prestigious option for the publication of their work.
In addition, through our network of bookstores, Librerías UC, we are able to offer the community of readers all of our active titles as well as a varied selection of books from the most important publishing houses in Chile and abroad.
Ediciones UC is a division that operates under the aegis of the Vice-Rectory for Communications and Public Affairs of the Universidad Católica and is comprised of an Editorial Committee that is presided over by the Vice-Rector. The members of this committee include the Executive Director of the Vice-Rectory for Communications and Public Affairs, the Director for Continuing and Extension Education, the Editorial Director and Editorial Coordinator of Ediciones UC, and five esteemed members of the university faculty, representing a broad range of academic disciplines.
Ediciones Universidad Católica is a self-financing entity that achieves its financial goals through the publication of, on average, 35 new titles and a similar number of reprints each year. By and large, the books published by Ediciones UC are the work of Universidad Católica professors, but the solicitation and publication of external projects has become more and more frequent in recent times. All of our authors receive their royalties in a timely manner, as stipulated by the laws governing Intellectual Property, and their books are promoted both in the Catalogue “Libros de Chile para el Mundo” (Books from Chile for the World), published by the Chilean Association of Publishers, Distributors, and Booksellers, and on the web site of Ediciones Universidad Católica de Chile. In addition, our books frequently receive attention from a wide variety of media outlets that quite often receive glowing reviews and features, on TV and the radio, and in newspapers, literary supplements, and well-known cultural and specialized periodical publications.
As their graphic concept clearly demonstrates, Ediciones UC books are published through two well-defined series: a traditional series, with selected texts covering a wide variety of disciplines as well as a range of general nonfiction titles; and the series entitled Textos Universitarios (University Texts), which constitutes an important academic and editorial complement to the first series, responding essentially to a vocation of in-class academic learning. To this category we should make note of the Textos Escolares (School Texts), the majority of which are religion books for the preschool and elementary school level.
Another important feature of our catalogue is our collection of manuals and workbooks aimed at preparing students for taking the Prueba de Selección Universitaria (PSU), Chile’s standardized college admissions exam. Ever since this series was created over ten years ago, it has remained the number one choice for college-bound students, having sold to date over 120,000 copies, most notably the manuals on Language and Communication, Mathematics, History and Social Sciences, Physics, Chemistry and Biology in their Compulsory and Elective formats, and the workbooks in Language and Communication, The Sciences, Mathematics, and History and Social Sciences.
Ediciones UC has its own institutional sales team, the job of which is to promote and sell our titles through the network of commercial bookstores, secondary schools, libraries, universities and other book-buying institutions throughout the country. Ediciones UC is an active member of the Chilean Association of Publishers, Distributors and Booksellers, and participates in the most important trade fairs for books both in Chile and abroad.
As part of our quest to reach more and more readers, and offer our authors an attractive option for the sales and promotion of their books, we maintain a joint publishing agreement with the Mexican editorial group Alfaomega, which has allowed us to distribute over 50 of our titles throughout Spain and a number of Latin American countries. Most recently Ediciones UC signed a joint publishing agreement with Grupo Noriega Editores, also in Mexico. Ediciones UC has contracts for the direct consignment of its titles with a number of bookstores all across Latin America.
In closing, we would like to emphasize our commitment to serve as a relevant actor in the dialogue between the University and the realm of culture, as a window onto society that offers a vital space for the publication of books of the very highest caliber, books that disseminate and extend the frontiers of contemporary knowledge and scholarship.
